Burning Man DPW Commissary Tent Lead in Reno, Nevada

JOB SUMMARY

The Department of Public Works (DPW) Commissary Tent Lead will manage the build and strike of the commissary tent in accordance with established timelines, plans and safety standards. This role will also manage the maintenance and repair of these tents in response to the elements and general wear and tear during their entire use on site, acting as an important support for the Commissary Crew Operations. 

    This temporary, ineligible for benefits role is: 

  • From August - September : Full-Time, Non-Exempt , based in Black Rock City, Nevada .

    DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS 

    Tent Maintenance (35%)

  • Manage the storage, and inventory of all parts, materials, and components of the commissary tent and appropriate areas.

  • Manage the supervision of the tent during the time it is erected and maintain the integrity of the structures through repairs and general maintenance to ensure the safety of those using them.

  • Oversee and insure the proper packing, transportation, and storage of the tent. 

  • Use of heavy tent materials such as hammers, spikes, tent fabric, tools, and ratchet straps.

    Tent Build and Strike (30%)

  • Manage the pre-set up of the commissary tent which includes site-survey, tent-stake placement, and material distribution.

  • Help to lead the crew in the the set up and construction of the tent in accordance with established timelines alongside heavy equipment.

  • Help to lead the crew in the deconstruction of the tent after its usage and in accordance with established timelines.  

    Commissary Support (30%)

  • Provide additional support to commissary crew as scheduled by Commissary management.

  • Assist with the opening, closing, and daily operations of the meal shifts including cleaning the tables after meals and adhering to, and exercising health and sanitation best practices, ensuring that required standards of cleanliness are met.

  • Setting down flooring, putting out tables, hanging up market lights, and setting out condiments.

  • Maintain clear communication and coordinate with managers to ensure projects are completed, daily tasks are fulfilled, and facilities are prepared and adequately stocked.

  • Create and maintain a respectful, friendly, and comfortable environment where services are provided with care, and thoughtful acknowledgment and accommodation are provided to the best of the Commissary Crew’s ability.

    Other Functions and Responsibilities (5%)

  • Help implement, adjust and support changing safety protocols as directed.

  • Work with the Team to plan and execute LNT and Waste disposal plans for all relevant operations.

  • Participate in  Meetings when requested and maintain related correspondence.

  • Be familiar with, understand and act in accordance with Burning Man’s staff policies, protocols and behavioral standards.

  • Monitor personal well-being by setting realistic goals and managing self-care while proactively addressing any concerns with management.

  • Perform other duties as required

     

    LEARNING AND TEACHING

  • Documentation - Assists in the creation, publishing, and maintenance of process documentation related to their assigned duties.

  • Knowledge sharing – Helps acculturate and educate junior staff in Burning Man culture and business processes.

  • Training development - Collaborates with the education team to develop training materials in their area of expertise, as requested.

  • Learning – Pursues ongoing learning in their area of expertise, working to stay current on emergent knowledge, skills, and processes.

     

    QUALIFICATIONS

      Required

  • Has knowledge of large outdoor event tents and big tops such as proper rigging, proper knots, and layout.

  • Able to lift 50+ lbs comfortably, safely and often.

  • Knowledge of and willingness to practice cleaning and sanitation procedures as they apply to the Commissary.

  • Is willing to cover for any commissary shift-lead crew as needed and perform front-of-house duties during most shifts.

  • Operates with a high level of integrity and follow-through; Must be able to work early, late, and during odd hours.

  • Able to proactively identify and work on tent maintenance, prevention, and repairs without needing to be directed to do so, proficient self-starter and also able to ask for help when needed.

  • Has knowledge of Burning Man and DPW and has the skill set and experience of being Black Rock Desert ready.

  • Experienced with using 2 way radios and/or willing to learn.

  • Has a professional work ethic and shows enthusiasm toward working with others; A flexible and understanding attitude that balances the needs of people and daily practices with care and attention.  

  • Effectively manages own time and supports the efforts of the team as a whole.

  • Capable of working in an extreme environment including drastic temperature changes, high winds, poor air quality and low to no visibility at times.

  • Ability to temporarily relocate for work at the Burning Man event held in Gerlach, Nevada

    Preferred 

  • It is helpful if the candidate has previously been to Burning Man and/or is familiar with its culture.

    REQUIRED LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS

  • Valid driver’s license and a good driving record

     

    COMPENSATION

    Individual compensation decisions are dependent on a variety of factors, including prior experience and geographical location. The anticipated rate for this position:

  • From August - September is $15.75 to $18.25 per hour .

     

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • On-playa:   This position requires periods of heavy lifting, bending, kneeling, squatting, and climbing. This position will be physically demanding, and requires individuals with good physical health, and endurance. Work will include the need to find and meet with department representatives who may not be in the vicinity therefore this could include walking or using some form of transportation. Much of the work will be in outside weather conditions and will be exposed to fumes or airborne particles as well as possible extremes in temperature.
